Lanscape lens for Nikon D700
I'm looking for a reasonably priced (ja right!) lens for landscape shots - I only shoot wildlife but would like to get into landscape when not at work (a game reserve). For this reason willing to sacrifice a bit of IQ for price!
The lens I'm considering is a Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX. I just want to know if anyone has any experience with the lens & if it is suited to the FX sensor. I like it due to it's price (R4 600 at Orms), apeture & it has a 77mm filter size! Plan on a 70-200 VR II Nikon in future once I've won the lotto!
Your input would be greatly appreciated

The Nikon 24mm F2.8 AFD may also be an option ? Not sure how it compares to the Sigma.

If you are going too be using it primarily for landscapes, then spending lots of money on a large aperture lens seems a waste. You will be stopping it down to around f/11 anyway. You may therefore get away with a cheaper variable aperture zoom lens for landscapes. You could also look at the 24-70 f/2.8 from Sigma -a bit more expensive but a more useful range.

If you can honestly get some bucks together, get the 14-25 f2.8, image quality will blow your mind (and the budget as well)

You should pick up a 20mm 2.8 pretty cheap as well.

Not good for a D700 - It's FX, that lens is DX.

Did look at it & agreed on the quality but don't anticipate doing enough landscape work to justify cost - plan on getting the new 70 - 200 next year as well!
The reason why I like the sigma is it has a "macro" (don't anticipate it blowing my mind!) ability, 77mm filter size & is also fast enough at f/1.8 do be used indoors without flash. At 28mm it also wide enough for landscape work...

Okay I understand. Look carefully at the 28mm and assess its minimum focusing length because that is the only reason why it is usually marked as "macro" ie it can focus closely. As a true macro lens, it is far to short anyway even for just 1:2 macro work.
My take, then rather look for a very good 2nd hand Nikon wide angle and use it for what you want it for. Build your lens arsenal based on good quality lenses rather than going "cheaper" now and lose more later. Just my personal experience that I share here and no criticism on your personal preference, please.

No criticism taken! Just looking for sensible advice - currently I have a Sigma 50-500 that I use (my only lens having switched from canon where I dealt in "L" seies lenses & understand the need for good glass - want ot up my lenses - have decided on the new 70-200 next year, in the interim wan to scratch the lens itch!! (70-200 was going to be initial choice but having read about poor performance on Fx decided to wait for new release - managed to pick up brand new Bigma for R8000 kindly brought for me from B&H personally by a friend!)
Will be trolling the used section - sadly high end lenses retain their value (sadly for me that is!)

I recently got a Tokina 12 - 24mm which I am very happy with, its pretty good value and good enough optics. In general though I have regretted buying lenses other than Nikon originals - I had a bunch of Sigma's years ago but each only lasted about 3 months in my bag before I worked them out. I used to work like you do at a reserve and shoot wildlife, I have a manual nikon 500mm f4P lens for sale which I will put on classifieds shortly.
