With my 3 & 4 I used the naked 500 and with X the 500 + 1.4. Try setting af mode 6 with ring of fire and see what happens. Must agree that with a 400 lens I would suggest the 7D, not ff for birds.

Doug, I have only been using centrepoint with surrounding points on my 1D3, 1D4 and 1DX. I have never used all points before, except for the odd family snap. I will definitely try zone focus on the...

Re: 1DX auto ISO won't "float"

Doug, my setup is exactly like yours, and it works perfectly. Major difference between 10 fps and 12 fps! Shutter sounds quite a bit softer than 1D4.

If you are going on the Froneman trip I suggest you take the 400. We didn't see any animals only birds. I used a 1D4 and 500 and this was perfect. Only for the fish eagles I wish I had a 400.

    Canon 1Dx review

Have a look at Andy Rouse's review of the 1DX on his blog at www.andyrouse.co.uk. One mean machine! He also tested the D4.

    Re: Diving Kingfishers

Do not try and track the kingfishers. Pre-focus on where you think they may enter the water. Only try and lock focus once they have hit the water. This is quite easy for PK's as they typically...

Re: Bird Photography: Dx vs Fx

    Leon,

I can't help you, but what will come up in this discussion definitely is the % cropped. I would like to know what exactly does one mean when you say it is a 50% crop? I reason as follow:

    Re: Okavango -Kit to take

I took a 1D4 with a 500 and a 7D with a 70-200 and 1.4x. If you go for birding (fish eagles, skimmers and bee-eaters), you can't go wrong with the 500. On a 1.6 crop factor like the 7D, the 500 may...

    Re: D3S 2nd hand Sales??

In reading the latest article on Rob Galbraith's website "Q&A with Nikon D4 engineer Toshiaki Akagi" it seems as if there are indeed a couple of areas where they can better the faultless D3s (or are...

Re: Upgrading Canon 7D to 1D Mark iV

I just came from a birding safari trip to Botswana and used both the 7D and 1D4. Light levels are fairly low and for the 7D you need a very high shutter speed for moving subjects. This was...

Re: Upgrading Canon 7D to 1D Mark iV

I actually meant the 1Dx + 600f4 II will be the ultimate weapon, added to that the 1.4x.

I have both the 1D4 and 7D and I personally feel that the 2x price difference between the 1D4 and 7D is...

Re: Upgrading Canon 7D to 1D Mark iV

I don't think there is a better combination than a 1D4 and 500f4 currently. Next year it will obviously be the 1Dx and 500f4 II. 1D4 and 500f4 will then be completely rubbish :-)

Re: 7D vs COst of 1D Mark IV

Ditto Neal, I have the exact same set-up. I believe that the cost difference between the 2 is justified. Like the 7D however as a light camera to take with me to school sports, etc.
  25. Re: Canon 1D Mk IV Memory Settings ?

    Jola,

It can definitely be done, mine is set up like that. The bottom half of the manual page 56 should be followed.
