A question which arose from the recent Canon Roadshow, relating to the aerial photography work of Mark Mansfield. I had hoped to speak to Mark and/or Rodger after the presentations but of course they were inundated by guests and I had to pass on the opportunity.

Mark provided some EXIF information on his photographs, and in a number of them we noticed that the shutter speed was a lot slower than we would have anticipated, often less than 1/100th of a second (on a crop frame body, using a tele-zoom lens).

A friend of mine sitting next to me who is a keen bird photographer was amazed at these slow speeds, particularly given that the resultant files were of sufficient quality to be used on glossy magazine covers. Her experience was that any shutter speed nearing 1/100th would almost certainly result in a blurred bird photograph, and more than likely a blurred animal photograph as well. Yet here were flying aircraft captured in sharp detail, despite it being a moving subject, photographed from a moving platform.

So the question is how can this best be explained?

I creates a group a few days ago and it has EXPLODED in popularity. Basically it is a bunch of photographers and general bird snappers (including some members from ODP) that post our most horendous mistakes and just laugh at the fact that we are all human.

275 members joind in 4 days, almost 250 photographs and thousands of hilarious comments and it is growing rapidly.

Really if you have not had a look and do actually have a sense of humor you really are missing out.

Hi guys

Like all of you have done someway through your hobby of photography I have recently thought of making a living out of photography , a business if you may. Unfortunately the first thought of this made a swarm of discouragements pop into my head. How do I start ,how do I run it and the most important how do I make a profit of it. I thought of this for a long time and then yesterday like a sign from heaven by tutor at a online based photography school , Stephen Powers suggested that I read a book of Dan Heller.

Profitable Photography in the Digital Age: Strategies for Success by Dan Heller:

It's aimed at the American market, and covers tax, marketing strategies (including using the internet) and has in-depth analysis of various types of photography businesses and what makes them work. Also includes short and long-term strategies for a successful photography business. Also business models.

I have now read 20% of the book and so far it has helped a lot. I would recommend this to any one who thinking of a business in photography. It's one of those books that lets you think and in my opinion that one of the best kinds on books.

Hope you take a look.:)
We will be traveling from the north of Zambia and were thinking about going to Etosha, but concerned that its a very long trip. Is Mana Pools a worthwhile sub or should we make the trek to Etosha?

Whats the general sentiment?
Words of wisdom from those that have been would be great if you have the time.
Where to stay?
Where are the best photographic spots?
Any other advise would be welcomed.

So, this Saturday had me nervous as a drug smuggler in Taiwan.
The wedding was 700km away from home. Being such a small town, not a singular camera shop within driving range means I made sure I packed backup everything. I packed at least 2 of everything and headed out to the location.
The boudoir session scheduled for the morning started of well, nailing all the shots the customer requested, I was well chuffed at the progress and it was decided to take a risky shot of the bride-to-be out in the hotel hall. A quick pop outside to get the lighting set up before the bride made her appearance and POP!, lost a SB700. No worries, I've got another packed in the bag. A few shots, bang, lost the other SB700 as well, must be something in the air, but now I was stressing. The church does not allow flash photography, so that was least of my worries, but the formals and reception? First dance, speeches, oh no!!! I was about to go insane from stress.

...until we walked into the hall and was beautifully lit, bright tungsten filled the room and we were able to use my Samsung S3's built in flash pointed into a brolly for just a dash of fill light. The results were awesome and all the stress for nothing.

I guess the point of this overly long post is just to let you know that no matter how bad things seem, there is always a way if you look hard enough.

Keep strong and happy shooting

If I was to drop the price to R6 500 for this week, would that interest any of you.

It would have to be cash, and also I'd like it to go to an ODP'er (call it giving back), but that's not essential.
